Exterior Seam: Front or Back?

Postby Seth A » Wed Feb 20, 2008 2:50 pm

What are some thoughts on where to put an exterior seam. My Tear will be 10 ft long, so with 4x8 ply, will need to have a seam somewhere. Can anyone think of any structural considerations or is it just preference and aesthetics? My current plan is to place them at the back and Im building sandwich walls so I can brace them inside with the 1x4s.

Thanks

...if you are going with a sandwich wall with internal framing, you could put the seam, almost anywhere ya wanted it to be...some folks like to put it in the door area, since that is the smallest area to put one in...personally, I like it to the rear of the wall but it is all a matter of preference....

If you break your seam at the front or rear of your door you only have a couple feet of actual seam. They seem to all but disappear with the door trim and light fixtures drawing your eye. You can further hide it by stratigacly placing your side light over it. This helps to eliminate possible seperation problems.

If you are covering the side with aluminum, you could put the seam at the vertical bulkhead where it won't be seen from the inside. If you are going with a woody , you could get a 4x10 sheet so there is no seam to cover. A lot depends on other details of your construction.

I put a hinge at the 8’ point, and made a 10’ countertop.

Many miles and many tears. Times were hard but now they're changing.
