My new TD door

Postby steve wolverton » Fri Feb 18, 2005 7:43 pm

Here's a pic of my new door.

The old doors were made from 3/8" and warped on me. We stayed dry during a 12 hour rain, but it did get a little wet while driving 7 hours in the rain.

The only thing I hate about building something, is having to build it twice. :x This time I did it overkill.

Image

Primered and ready for paint.

I used 3/4" lumber for the sides, and 1/2" birch ply for the inset. The inset actually sits inside the old door jambs (I made an aluminum frame for it) and the outer door sits on the outside of the door entrance. I used the router to round off the outside of the door, and I used it to cut away the material for the inside weatherstripping. It has weatherstripping on the door jambs, as well as the outer part. The doors are sealed twice with a drip rail above that.

We're not sure if we'll add a window to this door or not - the other door hasn't been changed out yet. We're considering making a faux door with a window on the opposite side.

Well see how it does - We're going camping at Tyler State Park tomorrow, and then I'm off to Caddo State Park on Monday & Tuesday.

I hate to see your hard work go unnoticed. Looks like a door on a tank

It should be great, and allot less prone to warpage. FWIW-I found this link for windows that would look good in your tear.

Hey, it kinda does in that picture. :) I need to add some rivets. Actually, it looks better black, and it will look normal with a window. As normal as a hostein teardrop can.

I just made it back from Caddo SP. Nice park, it's also nice to get paid to go camping. :)

The new door was a success! It stayed dry the entire time, and it rained *really* hard yesterday. I even forgot the weatherstripping at home, and it didn't get wet w/o the weatherstripping. Hurricane proof...well, maybe not.

The new door w/paint. I want some of those windows now.

In the land of big pines. Makes the tear look even smaller.

The swamp. What a creepy, cool place.

Brief case!? I chose a different path a long time ago. How about carry some pin flags and a GPS and help me flag out 18 miles of mountain biking trails.

I got a call for an interview today, so I might be getting another promotion. I'll be taking the cowper to Austin next week and getting paid to camp again.

Circles in first pic in this series?

Postby Dee Bee » Sun Mar 06, 2005 11:23 pm

In the first pic of this series there are two circles visible on the side of your TD. What are they?

Marine inspection hatches. They are used for ventilation and to pipe the a/c in.

Perfect. I've been looking for a nice access hatch for ventilation that I can close to the weather. Now all I need is one for an extension cord to run out of and still stay weathertight.
