Anyone Willing to build a teardrop?

Postby MeTrO » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:22 am

I am relativly new to teardops but I really like them. I am interested in buying one, but no one seems to sell one with the features I am looking for.

I am looking asking if anyone on this board would be interested in building one for me. I have gotten a lot of great ideas from other member's posts and have a good idea of what I am looking for.

I am not very mechanicaly inclined and I have a baby on the way, so building one is out of the question.

Please let me know if anyone is interested.

What part of the country are you in? I've seen a lot of offers of help from various members here. Maybe even a group-build kind of thing.

I live in Las Vegas....as you can probably already tell, A/C will be a requirement.

MeTrO... Have you talked to Cary Winch at CampInn? He builds some of the sweetest tears around with lots of options. May be just what you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply. I actually plan on calling them Monday (if they're open). I looked at their website and I like what I see. I just don't want to pay too much. I figured even with all the options I wanted, I would be able to have a non-retail builder build one for less.

How much do materials usually run?

I would still be interested in having a private party build one, and curious to know what the pricew would be.

Other than a/c, what features are you looking for?

First of all, are we crazy for being up this late talking about Teardrops??

Back to your question:

I like the layout on Bobs Teardrop from this forum.

I look at his set-up at http://www.bobsteardrop.com.

I like the hot shower and the galley set-up. I like the storage box up front (like the Camp-Inn). Grat place for some 6 volt deep cycle batteries. I would like a decent size fresh water container. Weight is not a factor. I have a Ram 3500 (overkill) to pull this with. TV/DVD and lighting.

I am open for additional suggestions.

It's OK, I have a few more hours before I go to bed. I work at night, I keep my same schedule on my days off. It's nice when we go to Vegas because it puts me on a more normal schedule.

As far as the galley setup, I should ask, Which galley? I think he has 3 iterations pictured.

You could always buy a used one. Or buy a commercially available one and customize it to your liking. The hard part is the a/c unit since not everyone installs them. Maybe someone out there may have a line on one.

look at the top of this forum you will see search inter A/C
ask for the last 25 or 50 sites. There are several who have put one in and there been several discutions there.
some where there is a map of members locations this should give you an idea how many are close to you. maybe you can get a joint effort where you can do some of the work and feel like you had a hand in it.
I have not started mine the average trailer I have been told could cost around 3000 but they were working on one made from junkyard and closeout parts for around 200 + or - . I am starting with drawings of what I want. and printing out a wall of photo's of what I like. There are members who are very good at technical questions and Cad drawings. Keep asking questions some one has an answer. If you have someone build you one and you can not afford to pay labor you might work on some sort of trade out. You live where casinos offer giveaways to get folks in. Maybe you can snag something fun to trade barter. But some build for the love of it.

when is the baby doe?

Thanks for the replys.

Asian, I like the latest galley set-up. As far as a used one or commercial one, then modifying it, I think it would come out less expensive if I just had it custom built to begin with. It would probably be a lot "cleaner" on the installs too.

Ron, Baby is due at the end of May. Little Girl....ugghh.

I am really just interested in a builder willing to build one for me. Previous experience and a good design already are a big plus!

This is certainly a helpful board!

MeTrO... Did you see the post entitled skilled woodworker under the General forum? A builder in VA is wanting to build for someone. For his experience and someone else's benefit...

I did speak with him. He is looking to start learning how to build TD's which is great, but I was hoping to have someone who has already worked out the kinks and is familiar with the process to build my family's first tear.

He seems like a very skilled builder however and I am anxious to see what he comes up with for his first project.

Metro,
Have you looked at Mike's Lil'Diner?? I'm building two now, one, for Mike, with A/C and a furnace, one door. The other, for me, no A/C maybe a furnace...I'm in snow country!!..and two doors. Both are insulated, built-up walls, wood exteriors.
I'd like to keep building Tears..Contact me off board, if you would like to discuss the possibilities...Wood, Aluminum, size...
