Fenders to big, how can I...

My fender are too big for my wheels, I know I have to cut them down and will probably do it with a jig saw but does any one else have any other ideas. I'm going to cut the back side flange off, no worries though I'm not attaching the fender that way I'm attaching them to 1" square tube that will be attached to the chasiss frame.

What material are those fenders made of? Doug H. narrowed his fiberglass fenders down.

You could probably use the same steps using a metal cut off, and welding it back again. A bit more grinding, and a little bondo may smooth the surface out. When the paint is applied, it should hardly be noticeable.

They are 16g steel, and I've seen that post of Doug H. but thanks anyways. Yeah I was thinking the same way a lot of welding sanding and bondo, I wonder if I can purchase new ones that are more custom fit to my trailer?

Thanks for your help.

How about just raising them up so you have the same clearance at the top as you do in the front and back may help the looks.

I was thinking more that maybe if you cut the front and back sections that hang below the frame, that they might look just fine without making them narrower.

That would be a lot easier then I wouldn't have to do any welding or bondo work.

Thanks, Larry

Just cut the front side and viola...instant mud flaps on the back. And even less welding or bondo work.

Or just cut enough off with one cut so there are no long ends on the front or rear. The fender is round right?? Rotate the fender if it is round.

Also for aesthetic reasons I would try to keep the gap between tire and fender the same on the top and sides. If the gap is too large taller tires and/or larger wheels will fill the fender.

My thoughts were to bite the bullet and buy some the correct size for your tires, save what you have for another build.

By thinking new, you have all the options again

It might be cheaper, and much less fuss, to buy new fenders that fit better. If you consider buying new ones kmtparts.com has steel fenders at reasonable prices to fit a range of tires sizes and widths.

I bought 10-3/4" wide steels fenders for 14" wheels from them for $16 each. Some other sizes cost less. Their service was good and they arrived quickly. They look good and sturdy. I felt they were a very good buy when similar looking fiberglass fenders would have cost $250, or more, for a pair.

Mike, I say make your own fenders. Your tear is beautiful and matching fenders would really make it stand out. In my opinion.

Here's a photo of my fenders, very easy to make.
