I hope everyone had a great 4th....we did ...didnt get a whole lot accomplished on the build up ,but we did get some work done ....the framework is about 80 % complete as far as cut and fitting goes (included a few more pics)...once that stage is complete than everything gets torn down and re-assembled with solvent weld ...then we'll be ready for the "skins"....we've pretty much have decided to go with grey/silver metallic to match our tow vehicle including side graphics ...anyway thats it for now ...we'll keep you all posted with up dates as they occur. ;)

Interesting. What will your skins be?

skins

Postby daddiozz » Wed Jul 09, 2008 6:41 am

in answer to the question of skins ,the exterior will also be PVC 4x8 sheets 6 mm thick....this a common PVC wallboard used in commercial exterior signs ,very durable ,strong and lightweight...it will take paint ,but why bother?its available in a multitude of colors molded in ....

...well I've run into a lil snag on the skins,....the supplier had to backorder part of my order due to a rosin shortage....seems that making gasoline and diesel fuel is a higher priority than making rosins used in the making of certain plastics...so they re-ordered another panel from someone else that has it in stock...it'll be here next week instead of today as promised ...I guess I'll havta find something else to amuse myself this weekend instead of skinnin my PVCTTT :(.

Hey daddio.... so I'm curious how costly the skins are? will it stand up to sitting in the sun? and not have any cracking issues? I know you mentioned it being used for exterior signs. ....
Is it also fairly lightweight, comparable to 1/8" mahogany, etc?

And how will you attach it to the pvc frame? What size is that pvc pipe?

Having a 4cyl Honda Accord, this lightweight concept is catching my interest!

....skin cost varies depending on color (I'm not kidding...) mine are grey to match my tow vehicle they're $34 per sheet @3mm(appx 1/8 in) ,$65 @6mm...i was originally going with the 6 mm for added strength and stiffness but found out all that really does is add weight so I'm using the 3mm...It has a UV protective coating ,But I'm also going to spray it with a Dupont automotive base clearcoat which will significantly increase the UV protection as well.(I work in an auto body/paint shop) ...weight is appx 8lbs per 4x8 sheet.
....attachment to the trailer subfloor (first 2 1/2 inches)via wood screws...PVC solvent weld cement to the PVC framework. The pipe frame is 3/4 in sch 40 thick wall pipe appx 1 1/8 OD.
...my target weight is 500 lbs empty.....My 4 cyl KIA is rated at 2000 lbs but I don't believe in pushing my luck... :)....of course by the time I add a bed and cooking stuff and lights /battery...folding chairs ,and ezup and tables ,mine and my son's bikes PLUS my r/c gear... etc etc etc :(

Mike and Brenda wrote::thinking:  can you use the frame as a water tank

...I'm not sure if that would be feasible ...the total pipe length used is appx 180 ft x 3/4 ID ...total capacity would only be a few gallons...

....funny that you mentioned water tank by the way ....yesterday I came across a flat bottomed polyethelene (?) tank measuring appx 4 ft x 4 ft x 10 ft (gum drop shaped) and am thinking about maybe making that my next "tear" project.......in case you folks(T&TTT crowd) havent figured things out yet ,I tend to think further outside the "box" than most folk...

well ...framework (pipe) is finished ,all joints glued ...this thing is rigid now,no flex at all ...even though it isn't permanently attached to the trailer yet ...when shaken, pushed etc everything moves as one ...next step is to remove the framework from the trailer chassis so I can transport the skins home ,then finally assemble it all together ...assuming the supplier comes thru with the skins as promised on tuesday ,I expect to have it road ready for its maiden voyage (less interior finishing) this time next week. :D
