I used a piano hinge on my 6' wide TD Galley hatch and covered it with a flap made of a split fire hose... worked for a while(2 years ) ,but today I had the hatch up and it rained , and naturally the flap leaked like a colander when open... Grrrr!!! Now I have to either find a suitable replacement or just get a hurricane hinge 6'+ wide from one of the TD extortionists($$$)...any ideas would be appreciated...Thanks !!!
Actually I'm trying to sell it , but refuse to unless everything is in Perfect working order...wouldn't want to create bad feelings by passing on my problems to someone else... if I wanted to do that I'd have become a politician...

Glenn, either make up another seal or get one of the living/harsh environment hinges from McMaster(by the foot) or http://www.monroeengineering.com/hinges ... -hinge.htm (by the roll)...

M Jack , next time you see me be sure to give me a swift kick in the you know what for being so Stupid... the hatch was up so the water ran under the flap backwards ... DUH!!! ... so that means you can't have it open when it's raining :oops:

...What was I thinking...?????

Either I fasten both sides of the flap or just replace the whole thing with a "two Way" HH... "What a revolting development this is ...."

...a quick note..the HH can also leak when in the raised position when raining...of course, if it is raining the hatch should be closed anyway......

GPW ifin you cover that with pond liner/rubber roofing and screw down some aluminum strips over the edges it won't leak. Sealant under the liner!

Bicycle inner tube under the hinge might work. It did on my door hinge . :thinking:

Thanks Aunti, but I already got that arrangement, sorta',but was just too DUMB to realize the water would flow in the rear of the flap with the hatch open , and I shouldn't do that ...as so aptly suggested by MJ... :thumbsup:

I deserve a kick... :oops:

Now comes to mind the idea of putting in two small drain plugs , "just in case"...pop the corks , there goes the water...my galley is a simple LARGE area with a shelf, well sealed and painted...nothing to soak really , except the contents ... :roll:

I was serious about some drain holes ... anybody else using em'??? boats have them !!! Why not TDs??? In our super damp climate , might as well be a boat... :shock:

MadJack and I came up with a drain hole kit for those Amish tears a while back, maybe you should look into it :lol:

Drain holes aren't a bad idea...

I have a couple in mine where water could cause a big problem if it were allowed to accumulate. (Like next to my water tank...)

A small piece of bronze screen stapled to the underside of the floor keeps bugs and other creatures out.

An added benefit is more fresh air to breathe, with no worries about having to remember to open a window.

Rob, Thanks , that screen idea is just the ticket...drain holes make sense around here with the torrential rains....I accidentally left the roof vent slightly open one time ... had to get the mop out...
...maybe some drain hole "plugs" for traveling in wet weather... no road water...

Since MJ told be to keep the hatch closed in the rain , guess what ??? No more leaks ...

By do I feel DUMB!!! :oops:
