Has anyone given any thought, or already have a plan, to maybe carry a canoe on top?

I thought about it, but then scrapped the idea when I realized the canoe would have to come off before the galley hatch could open.
If I do ever get a canoe, I think it will go on top of the tow vehicle.
Since I don't have a canoe right now, I don't have to worry about it.

For a brief moment I once pondered carrying a kayak on top of TD. One other problem is... once you get to your campsite, settle in. How would you transport your boat closer to a launch site (if needed to do so). You would then have to put it on the tow vehicle. Might as well carry it on the tow vehicle in the first place. I don't own either yet, but that is what I came up with.

That was my deduction as well. As cool as it might look, it is not practical to carry it on the tear, it should be on the tow vehicle.

Yes I thought about this a bit - my tow vehicle is taller and I'd like to get the canoe onto the short tdrop. I got worried about the sides being strong enough for cross winds - mine are 3/4 ply - I had a vision of a cross wind twisting the roof off. However, now having over-built everything I think it is strong enough to take a canoe due to the cross bracing of the cabinetry and kitchen bulk wall.

I also thought about a canoe on the TD, but we sometimes go canoeing without camping so we would have had to put a rack on the TV anyway.

I planning on have kayaks transported onto of my mine when it is built and finished. This way I will have a safe way to store and secure when not ontop of my truck or being used.

Something like this?

I carried mine on my tear to Perris gathering two years ago. I couldn't fit it on my truck because of the bikes and other gear. I couldn't open the hatch without untying the canoe.

hmm how about both? Carry on the tear while traveling over the road, and transfer to another rack on the tow vehicle to tote around the park? It would take extra expense but would serve both purposes

I my mind the biggest reason to put a canoe on the TD is that it is generally lower than the tow. I lose several MPG putting it on top of my car. I would think it would have less affect, on milage, if carried on the TD.

Having said that I find that it is just easier, for me, to keep it on the tow.

I mounted mine with a goal post mount on the tounge. It keeps it far enough forward to open the hatch when it's on top.
