I have a 4" mattress and I have 14" above that.

However, I find that the way I sleep, on my side I could have gotten away with less.

Happy Trails

I think the test is whether or not your shins hit the bottom edge of the shelf when you are moving to the laying down position or getting up, other than that all you need is toe room when your laying on your back

It would depend on your footsize. I met a guy with size 15s that is planning on building a teardrop. If you have a larger size foot then you may wish to go a little bigger than 14.....

Yup....what Steve said. How deep your cabinets are have a major bearing on your future shin conditions. I found that out on the Rocketear...not really bad, but need to remember that it isn't the same as in either of the other tears. I build using the counter top plane and the interior cabinet bottom as the same. Just for future contact...I round off the bottom of the interior cabinet frame with a router....there is a direct relationship between feet height and cabinet depth to minimize future scar tissue. Just what I've experienced. Thing is....it doesn't really matter if you are building off someones plans....it all depends on YOUR body size and bed time movement....Doug

5 years ago when I built my woody, I figured as long as my toes don't touch the bottom of the galley shelf, things would be fine. However, as an afterthought, I added a fold-away, flip-down interior cabinet with space above it for added storage.........big mistake!

My shins took a beating, big time. So, I relocated the interior cabinet near the ceiling and things are much better. I'm with Doug, as I also rounded off the lower shin-knocker area.
