Gosh...I bought some butyl tape for my windows (1/8 x 3/4) and was wondering what advice I might get about sealing a hurricane hinge. Stupid as it might sound...I can get marine adhesives (like Sika Flex, 3M etc) around here...but I had to order butyl tape!!!!

What's the concensus?

Dave, Grant Whipp sells the sealfor your hurricane hinge. I've used it on both TD's and they have never leaked. :D Danny

I've actually got Grant's seal both for the hatch and the doors. What I was wondering about was what I should put between the hinge and the the body of the tear...sorta like a bedding compound!!!

BTW...disaster struck today...I'm pretty sure the motor for the ShopSmith crapped out while ripping purpleheart for the tongue box. It's an older model, but sure has been trustworthy over the years..

Dave,

I used butyl rubber tape under my hinge and caulked along the leading edge of the hinge for good measure. No leaks yet.
Here's a couple links you might use concerning the Shopsmith problem.

Thanks Kevin...most of my ShopSmith is Ebay!!!! I think I'm going to pull that motor and take it in and get it bench tested before I order another. I just wish it was a bit easier to get at!!! I can't say enough about how much I like that tool. It's been a trooper in a small garage with very limited room....

I used a bead of Silicone between the hinge, both sides. I also added a small bead filling in where the hinge, after mounted, meets the body. No leaks for me either.

Dave, I used the same hatch seal between the body and hatch where the two parts of the hurricane hinge meets. :D Danny

Dave...might look into 3M 5200 sealant. I like it, small tubes available, made for submersible situations. Doug
