Im doing some varnishing here on shelf and cabinetry in the tear and using Marine Varnish. How many coats have you applied ?

I know its also a matter of perference to each builder but in general how many coats is enough as not to over do it?

At least 4 and I think more unless you are redoing it every year. You might ask the guy with the boat. I bet he can tell you what you need for your area.

Hi Aunti M :)

He has 8 -10 coats. With fine sandpaper sanding in between coats. I talked with him an hour or so ago. I have half gloss
varnish. The more the shinier I guess. I dont want to do it every year on the inside.

So I dont need it as glossy as he has it. Ok well 2 coats on so far but I,ll do a couple more. ;)

Heya Hekki,

I put like 10 coats on my main shelf. I light sanded with a 600 grit paper between each coat using my palm sander. Made it look really smooth and even. Like Miriam, I put 4 coats on everything else back there in the galley area but with no sanding.
