Well this can happen to anybody. How big of a sand thru do you have. One fix is to cut in a Dutchman - a patch. You could do a interesting shape using wood veneer that is a contrasting type -that would fill the void and I would repeat the pattern across the door panel. Kind of like you really intended to do that. If it is really big try and find some veneer close to the graining you have - check your local wood supplier.
Or-
Again the size of the problem - could you build a small magazine holder. Something you could use to store somethings.
Or-
Patch it with an exterior wood patching compound and paint the door some matching color.
