Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Has anyone here used the plans from the Big Woody site to build their TD? Supposedly they are very comprehensive, which I like, and I do like the styling of their TDs. On the other hand, I'm still leery about such a big project, especially since I don't have a lot of woodworking skills. But paying 2K versus 7 or 8K for a camper is very appealing......

Plans??? We don't need no stinking plans!!!

But I (and I'm pretty sure a lot of others) have built their trailers without following formal plans. A concept and an idea is all you need. All the other information you need is here for the asking (free of charge). Personally, most of my building techniques came from the Benroy plans at the top of the page, even though I didn't build anything resembling a Benroy. I would totally recommend a beginner to read through those pages several times before purchasing a set of plans. If you still feel the need to work from a pre-drawn set of plans, search several options before you decide on just one. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't let the "fever" overcome; plan what you want before plunking down any hard earned cash.

Haven't tried them but if you like the profile you can get close. The Generic Benroy plans are very adaptable. If you read them and think you are missing things then I advise two things. One is to get a good set of plans and two---the most important--is to buy Steve Fredericks CD. It has shop tech. for building TD's and most find it very helpful.

I second Miriam's suggestion to get Steve Fredericks' CD. It's a very worthwhile investment. He documents almost every step for building a teardrop, with plentiful pictures, some alternative ideas, many labor and back saving ideas, plus you can become a member of his helpful (members only) discussion group where he and other builders share ideas and experience. His methods are very adaptable to a design of your choosing. He prefers Woodie teardrops so the one area it's kind of light on is skinning and trimming with aluminum.

I bought my td from Big Woody and I love it. Dave, the owner, is a great guy and is more than willing to help with anything he can via phone or e-mail.
