Roof painting and sealing - TTT repair

OK, working on the old Skyline but letting my mind range forward to things I need to do - like reseal the roof.

This thing is just a bad design on the roof-to-side joins - lock-formed seams that act like gutters right into the inside. The roof top panel is used-to-be galvanized steel which has now just gone rusty.

I sourced some butyl rubber caulking (Ace hardware, believe it or not, sold for caulking gutters so it should be good for standing water!) and I will caulk the seams with that unless a better suggestion wanders by, however painting the roof and sealing it has me concerned.

In order, my concerns are:

Rusty roof - pre-treatment of what and how that won't lift later or interfere with the sealants??
Elastometric roof coatings - worth the effort?

I am inclined to wirebrush as much of it as I can, seal the seams, remove and reseal the center vent (need to do that anyway to replace bits of the roof framing) and hit it with Rustoleium Rusty Metal Primer, than topcoat white. Better methods for this essentially flat roof would be appreciated.

Thanks - ALan

Proguardcoatings.com

Liquid roof or Liquid rubber.

Either one is as good as the other...go for price.

Remove rust as much as possible and coat.

This stuff is final.

Happy Trails

Re: Proguardcoatings:

Thanks - that was exactly what I was hoping for. I'll clean it up as much as I can, but wirebrushing a 50-square-foot roof without power equipment could be difficult... :)

Much appreciated!

Alan

There are several of these products out there – I think 3M makes one called Extend (or at least they used to). They work by actually causing a chemical reaction – kind of an oxidation (not unlike the dull layer that forms on aluminum) that prevents further [deeper] oxidation and rust. Most of your big box, or automotive supply stores should have a similar product.
