Now that I'm getting close to finishing my cubby... I was wondering how people are securing their microwave ovens onto the countertop and do they survive the bumpy ride?

Last time I went to a state park, I took a shower in the morning and there was a lady standing in the women's restroom holding a four-cup drip coffeemaker ... Just standing there holding it so the cord could reach the plug up by the mirror and it could brew its coffee. The teen next to her was waiting for a ceramic hair straightener to heat up.

Had a good giggle when we got back to the site, drinking coffee from our enamel perc with our hair in bandanas. You just reminded me of that - thanks for the repeat giggle. And now back to your regular programming...

Microwaves ride fine in a teardrop as long as they are secured down. All of my teardrops have microwaves installed. There great to have when cooking something quick or warming something up. I remember when I first built my first teardrop many years ago, I posted a picture on another site of the microwave installed in the galley of my first teardrop. WOW what an uproar I got about that from traditionalist in the teardrop world at that time. Times have changed now. Actually a microwave will spend most of it time as a storage cabinet one less you won't have to build. Camping you store stuff in it or sometimes we use it as a bread box either way it is nice to have around

In two years, I kept thinking,... "I'll get a microwave" , "Will I really use a microwave?" ... "Oh, that's a good price . I should get that for the camper..."

But still haven't gotten one, luckily camp with other teardroppers and have been able to use theirs in a pinch.

But as far as securing.. I know one guy made a sort of sleeve out of terrycloth hand towels, for the glass turntable inside. Slip the glass piece in the terrycloth, or wrap it in your dishtowel before traveling.

I know my local Camping World store had some kind of bracket for securing microwaves or TV's . You might check that or Cabela's website .

One thing I thought a m/w would be handy for, is if for instance I took steaks for dinner and they were still frozen.

No problem.... that happened this last campout. I just set them on the picnic table in the sunshine for about 30 minutes... thawed!

I still go back and forth on a microwave...I think for the moment we'll stick wth the toaster oven...it's certainly lighter......and it can do toast!

I built the nuker into the cabinets, it doesn't have much room to move around. Truthfully, I don't use it much but it is nice to have when I do use it.

Off topic - sorry, but I wanted to chime in on this. The last time I went camping I went to the restroom to put in my contacts and brush my teeth. As I opened the door I saw someone straightening their hair with a flat iron. Since I didnt have my contacts in I thought for a second that I was in the ladies' restroom by accident - until the guy lifted his head up and ran his fingers through his freshly straightened hair. I was never so glad that I have chosen to buzzcut my hair!

The microwave has gone on 2 of our 8 - 10 gatherings. Generally when the weather is cold and we are looking for a quick way to rewarm coffee and left overs or make hot tea or hot chocolate. It has the glass turntable in it so we stuff a pillow inside to help keep everything from bouncing around. It is not a built in so it rides in the bed until we arrive then placed on the let down counter top. It has proven almost worthless to us since we got the redneck hot water heater.

The little toaster oven is a very handy appliance and has proven quite useful.

Two years ago we sold our 31 foot motorhome, we did all of our cooking with the microwave and the coleman stove on the picnic table, so I know we are the sort that will use it. I like the advice of placing it on the mattress- thanks all!
When I'm backpacking I use my Cat stove burning "Heet". I do all types of camping I reckon.

toaster ovens are wonderful.

if you haven't bought your microwave for your camper yet try getting a small basic model first (you can get a windup turntable, sold separately).

the ones made and sold for "dorm use" are sturdier, IMNVHO, than the big "kitchen models" that aren't meant to move around /need to be stashed.

I built my Microwave in. To keep it from moving I screwed some rubber cups to the countertop under the microwave feet. Stays put real good.

If you go to your local RV store you can get "appliance tie downs". Not cheap but they tie you appliances to the counter..........
