Kreg mini-jig - useful for TTT repair!
Posted: Fri Jul 03, 2009 9:39 amIn the rebuild of the Skyline I'm working on one thing I've had a lot of difficulty with is the joints on the existing structure being loose and/or wobbly. As the framing was originally fitted up dry and held together with (shudder) corrugated fasteners a lot of them have gotten less-than-stable with the years of rot and delamination of the interior paneling.
I had been edge-drilling and refastening with galvanized screws, but this was not only slow but difficult given the limited space to the outer skin. I certainly wan't going to add more corrugated fasteners...I hate those things.
While at the local Lowes i ran across what looked like a perfect solution - a Kreg "mini-jig" for less than twenty dollars. While not as fancy as the full system it let me drill and insert pocket screws through the faces of the boards. The addition of a simple clamp bent up from 1/8" steel also meant that I could do it with an absolute minimum of disturbance to the outer skin.
I realize this isn't particularly relevant to the teardrop construction folks, but thought I'd throw it out as an FYI to others doing the rebuild thing!
