Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I have been playing with the idea of a Westfalia type of pop top on my teardrop. I'm sure it has been done. Any info?

Hey Nic...haven't seen you in a while....Are you thinking of scrapping a Westfalia for the top and using it or just building your own? Bruce Osborne did the Boxcar and he has roughly a similar set up on his pop top. He really did a wonderful job on it all. Not a soft side top, but the idea is the same. Doug

Hey Doug. I'm thinking about building my own for the teardrop i have now. With a wooden top and soft sides that works like the VW Westfalia. Either one that pops straight up or one that is hinged at the back near the galley hinge.

Well, only you can be the judge of that. Having done a couple of trolley tops, I'd think you need to do some structural stuff to the existing roof to support the upper lifted portion and provide enough strength to a chopped roof and if it's not built in, could be a challenge. Me...I think I'd start with a new body to do it...just my opinion though. Doug

True true. I was thinking i would build a wood frame that ran side to side screwed into the 3/4" side walls.

Nic, I don't think I'd be of much help without seeing some rough sketches on what you have in mind based on what you are starting with. While I've cut out the center of my tears roofs with a trolley top, what you have in mind might not fit in with what I've done. Doug

I'm building a 'pop top' of sorts. (MyAway...However, the lifting roof is the last part to go on. I'm just working on the sides and stationary roof now.)

Heisley i like your pop top! I want mine about like that but soft sides. And thanks for the link Bodemer! I never thought about real VW soft sides. Hmm... i tow with a VW maybe i should look into that for sure. Or try and make up one that looks VW. OH and Doug ill try to get a sketch up to show what I'm working with.

Oh you know how it is. Busy with other things. I need to post some pix. I pulled my Teardrop to Oklahoma and back. That's one hell of a ride.

Another source would be the old Chinook's; mounted on Toyota pickup chassis.

Ok i want something like this pop top but i want mine to go up about two feet.
