Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I was just putting together my Christmas wish-list and started thinking about windows.

This would be the next big purchase for the build and I'd rather Santa defray the costs.

I like the look of the sliders and the crank-outs equally as well, but it looks like the sliders would seal better from rain and dust. Is that true? Or do the crank-outs seal pretty well?

Also, can you install the sliders on their side? Like, could I install the above window with the long side vertically if I wanted to?

I used the sliders from Grant on two builds. No problems or complaints with them.

sliders look nicer, but awning windows can be left open for ventilation when you go away from the trailer for the day.. so I went with awning.

Thanks Woody and Arne for the responses. It looks like we have one vote for each style of window.

Let me try a different tack. I'd like the windows to seal as well as possible going down the highway in case it rains (it does that occasionally in central TX). Also, I'd like to keep the fine dust out when visiting the desert, as well as the sand out when visiting the coast.

However, I'd like to think I could leave the windows slightly open while at the campsite at other locales for ventilation.

Am I asking too much? I realize this is camping, but I'd still like to get something that's going to work the best.

well, sliders are vertical... any blowing rain will come in if they are left open......

Not so true of awning windows.... I like sliders better, for their looks, but for practical reasons, went with awning... never had a leak, even when driving in heavy rain. of course, when you travel, vent and windows are closed up.

One negative about awning windows is they stick out and the will snag you when you go by, not only do they do damage to window, but to your body too...

I'd vote for crank outs. I've used Grants on 4 tears so far and the new trailer has 8 of them in it up to 15x24. I've never had one leak and they will allow you to have ventilation during a downpour without any coming in. Yes, they do stick out, but I haven't walked into one. Also, when people are viewing tears at a gathering, I will leave the window open on the 1 door and lock it, so no one can open the door into the side of the trailer and close it on the viewing door side. You gotta keep that in mind, that an open crank out can get into the side and gouge it. I also take a 4" grinder and radius the outer corners on Grants....just makes it a nicer appearance. Another vote for Crank outs. Bought 2 from Grant 15 x 18s. Work well no leaks in the rain if left open and seal tight for transport. As Doug mentioned door stops to keep them from hitting the TD side. I used a simple web strap with a Jackman clamp on the inside to limit how far the doors opens.
No problems.

Windows can be opened in the rain.

Install a door stop. Open the window all the way and then install a door stop so when window is fully opened it doesn't damage the side of the tear.


I never snagged anything when passing an open window.

What about "crank-outs" that look like sliders? I found these for my doors on Ebay and am very happy with them.

Wow! That's an overwhelming consensus for crank-outs! I was just worried they'd leak. I think they look much more...authentic.

Dave, I definitely do like the looks of Grant's "crankers", the strap idea is a great idea, too.

Ken, I really dig some of the windows I've seen on Ebay, but its not that easy to find a matched pair. Why are yours still sitting? No time like the present!

Doug, that's a pretty big endorsement. I'm going to let Sarah make this decision with a little persuasion.

I like Mike's windows, but if they don't materialize I'd definitely be happy with the crank-out windows.

Mine are still sitting (along with all my other parts I've collected over the last year or 2) since we bought 5 acres of land and are building in the spring.....
Guess we'll be camping in the back yard for a while.........

The seller I got mine from had lots of these windows (or did when I got mine) I won the auction for 1 and then they sold me a second one for my winning bid.

Another vote for crank-outs. No problems with leaks or dust.
