I see that CPES recommends using an oil based stain if staining the wood. Has anyone used stain under regular epoxy resin and if so was it water or oil based, and did it work well. I would like to coat my Generic Benroy with an oil based stain and then use regular Epoxy resin to seal it from the weather topped of course with a good uv varnish.

I've had real good results with epoxy over aniline dye. The advantage is that you can blend the dye easily and if it's on too heavy, take some off with a damp sponge or rag. Dyes can be purchased from Woodworkers Supply, Rocklers etc....Doug

I too would recommend aniline dye. It is soluble in alcohol or water, depending on what you get. I use Transtint dyes, available from Woodcraft. You can mix and match to get the color you want. I am skeptical about adhesion of epoxy, or anything else for that matter, to oil based stains. You can even add Transtint to the epoxy, though I have never tried it and would recommend some serious testing before committing to anything like that. I'm not totally down on oil based stain and use it in cabinetry, but a Tear sees weather, cabinets don't.

Regardless of water or oil bases; the important point is to allow the wood with stain applied to dry. Epoxy laid over any damp wood, either water or ail based is not going to adhere to the wood itself

I did not use CPES or West System epoxy, but I had the same results as in the article Dave linked to.
