hatches

my car is an hhr, so the back hatch opens up. is there any reason why i could not put a hatch to open up in the front of a tear instead of opening in the back?

using the term "tear" as in general. still not sure if i am going for a curve or more flat form.

but was just thinking of using space between both hatches (with out having to unhook tear and turn around. maybe putting tarp over in case of rain of extremely hot, sunny weather.

Do a search on this site for "Jim Dandy" it has the galley in the front.

The beauty of building your own is that you can do anything you want. Go for it!

You could make the hatch on the trailer long enuf that if you open it first then open the hatch on the car, the would overlap creating a dry galley area.

The only problems I see with the galley in front is having the tongue in the way and sealing the hatch. Of course, a removable tongue with correct one problem. You wouldn't be able to use a traditional hurricane hinge in that configuration either, especially driving in a heavy rain.

As far as a hurricane hinge not working in the front of a tear goes a gear hinge:

will solve this problem. So. Cal. Teardrops uses gear hinges on their galley hatches.

Cheers,

Gus

i may have to get back to you on that one (if i do a hatch in front). that was a list of things and i wouldn't even know where to start to pick.

thanks. i sure hope you all are up for helping a person with zero knowledge on this one. i know once i start i am going to be asking questions and more questions.

hubby will help i am sure, but i am not convinced i want his help on this one (well not some of his help). he will try to take over and over build. i can't have that in this because of the weight issue. he built a run in for our ponies and i swear he could run his truck into it and not damage the frame at all. if we have a tornadoe or hurricane that is where i am going to hide out.

I think a 1 piece hatch would be preferable and would eliminate the center seam and sealing problem.
A removable tongue would be a wonderful thing also.
The extended hatch would also offer a bit more shade
and weather protection in the open position. My chuck
wagon has a similar hatch and the hinge points will be
weatherproofed just like I did Chubby's galley hatch.
