Drop-Down Feed Window (Door)

Postby absolutsnwbrdr » Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:32 am

Anyone know anything about these doors that are found on ebay?

I've been talked into using 2 doors, and obviously 2 of these are quite expensive. Is there anywhere to buy a slightly smaller door of this style and maybe save $50/door?

Or are there vendors out there that I could get this same door? I've searched the internet but havent come up with anything other than the feed doors for horse trailers, which only appear to have latch handle on the outside.

I have them on my TD also, although I don't recall if that is the eBay vendor I bought from. The guy I bought from is on this forum. He goes by cks-1.

They don't come with instructions, but I know how they install, if you get them and need help.

I have purchased from this vendor. He is a good guy and very helpful. I have seen his finished trailers and they a very well built.

If you run into an installation problem, he will be more than happy to provide assistance. I decided not to use these doors only because I wanted to go with the more traditional style trailer and decided to build my own doors. The doors you are looking at are top notch in quality.

I did a cost breakdown once on what it costs to build a door.

Lock & hinges $75
"C" channel @ $10 for 8' $40
Alum flat stock $20
Window, delivered $90
Miss. sealant, screws, etc. $10

I couldn't build a door like that for $15

Those doors are a bargain.

redneck trailer supply had been carrying a smaller version, but the cost wasn't much less.I stopped listing the doors you found, the same i have sold because of the listing/final value fees.and the free shipping expense. If your willing to buy outside of ebay/paypal i should be able to save you some money,i will be going to elkhart friday or monday to pick up a load of supplies,i can bring a couple extra doors back for you.i will need your ship to info to see if the savings is worth it to you. send me a PM

I have a question for those of you who have used these doors. The recommendation I have seen is to have the bottom of the door mounted ½ the distance from the bottom of the trailer as your mattress. Meaning if you have a 8â€

I really like the look of these doors, but it appears the bottom window is the one that opens. Therefore using the build method above the first 4 inches of your screened window is blocked by the mattress and your body/blanket would block even more. This would greatly reduce the amount of air that would flow through the screen.
So if you have these doors is this an issue or did you mount the doors higher up?

Thanks

Yep.

My lock and hinges were cheaper but it is wood, and needs maintenance and that costs too.

Lock and hinges about $35
Wood $40ish
window (salvage) $30ish
Epoxy $35ish

and you have to maintain the wood door. That doesn't include any doorway trim or wood. And if it is raining sideways the water gets in some. This is not the place to cut prices and if I do it over I really like the window/doors.

If driving rain comes in, there is a design problem... I use Steve Frederick's door seal design and have gone through extremely heavy rains and strong winds with no leaks.

I like the looks of the windows but still prefer wood with piano hinges and lil bear windows... personal preference... 6 years, no maintenance. so far.

I figure 15/hinge, 40/window, 20/handle, 20/wood.... $95 vs $250.

And less chance of smash and grab. and if the window breaks, 40 to replace.

With this being my first build, I wasnt sure that I was ready to tackle building my own doors. The right tools certainly help, and my resources are somewhat limited. As far as a smash and grab, my teardrop is going to be a soft-top, with removable roof, so security is probably already an issue. I dont plan keeping any valuables in the teardrop. The most expensive thing that anybody might want to steal would be the battery & charger, but they will be in a locked tongue box.
