Plywood Weight

I feel like I should have been able to find this some other way, but haven't been able to so I'll ask here... Is there a straight forward way to estimate plywood weight? Do all types of plywood (of the same thickness) weigh more or less the same? How much does a sheet of 3/4" plywood weigh? Is it safe to assume that a 1/4" inch sheet weighs one third of that?

This may help some. This is marine plywood and it is slightly heavier than regular plywood. I had a fair supply left over from boat building and I'm using it on my tear to use some of it up.

The plywood estimating data I've worked out is 3.38 pounds per square foot per inch thick*. So 3/4" is about 3.38 * 8 * 4 * 3/4 = 81 lb. It's reasonable to assume that 1/4" ply will be a third the weight of 3/4".

There is a significant difference between the weights of different plywoods and I find Boulter Plywood offers good online data.

My experience is that the density and thickness variation from one supplier of (nominally) the same plywood is sufficiently great that it's wasted effort to try to estimate more accurately than +/- 10%. No doubt Aviation plywood will be much more consistent, but the cost......

*This is 650 kg/m3 if you're metric = 0.65 kg per m2 per mm thick.

Bob Villa, I mean how more expert can you get 8) , recommends estimating weight of a stack of plywood at 25 lb per 1/4 inch. That could be mixed thicknesses but works as a rule of thumb and is somewhat consistent with the other posts.

We use 5'x10' sheets of 3/4" Super Ply plywood to build our trailers.
So accordly it will be heavier. There is a difference in plywood. Some have junk wood for the core which makes it lighter. But than it will not hold screws etc as well. There are a lot of type of plywoods out there.

Merlin... Where did you find 5x10 ply? I've looked online, checked all local stores (not the big box places) and no one seems to have any idea. Do you remember the manufacturer or the mill? I realize what may available in Oregon probably isn't in Missouri but it may help to have a supplier name. Thanks, Dave

Pontiac Plywood here in Michigan has it... Are you planning a trip to MI anytime soon?

Got nothing planned... when are you coming to Missouri?

Just kidding - I'm pretty much planning on using 5x5 birch and joining them together for a core and skinning inside and outside. But 5x10 sheets would save me a lot of work...

Seriously though, when are you planning your business trip down this way? We should make it a point to meet up - dinner, drinks, something...

Even when I come to MO, I have no way to get 5x10 sheets of plywood there, unless, of course, you buy me a 5x10 trailer! LOL

As for when we get to MO, it's still up in the air. Family there is still in and out of the hospital.

BTW, if you are offering to serve drinks, might I suggest that you look into chocolate martinis. We were at a party this weekend where they served those, and let me tell you, that was the best drink I ever had.

If you ever make it to Vancouver Island, BC, there is a place just outside of Tofino that makes super chocolate martinis.
