Propane heater questions

Postby dh » Wed Mar 10, 2010 6:26 pm

Has anybody used a catalitic propane heater? How safe are they? How far from the walls do the back and sides need to be? How hard is it to plumb in line with the propane line gong to the stove?

Well, with care . . . . .

I have one that I use; however, just to heat, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER let it run while sleeping. And if you do use it, CO2, smoke and gas alarms!!!

Maybe a 12V ceramic heater would be the way to go.

Worthless; meant to drain a battery. Get a 12V heating pad for the mattress.

I use this Coleman Black Cat in my teardrop to take the chill off when I retire and in the mornings....works great, I just leave my window cracked a little and no problems.....works great on the counter while making coffee and at the table too. Cost about $50.00 and a cylinder lasts about 12 hours or so.

I mounted an 800 BTU catalytic propane heater in my Mini Shasta.

BUT as everyone has mentioned

NEVER LEAVE IT ON WHILE SLEEPING

I would light mine an hour or so before bed. Opening and shutting the door to get in would flush the cabin of CO2 and let in plenty of O2.

Then, once in the heater went OFF.

You can accomplish the same thing with a propane lantern using the same precautions.

In the right hand side of the photo is a shelf that slides in and out. My one single burner stove sat on that and could slide both outside into the galley and into the cabin.

On cold mornings I would slide the stove into the cabin and make a pot of coffee.

Once again,

NEVER WHILE SLEEPING

By the time the coffee was ready I'd have the windows open and the cabin was nice and warm.

runs on wood scraps or briquettes and briquettes are always on hand for the BBQ not to mention only 4 bucks at walmart for the store brand
