Unit to be separate from trailer frame?

Hi All!

I have been reading and reading many of the build threads. So inspirational! Seriously 8)

My first and major question and I have not yet seen a build thread on this idea, so if there are some please point them out.

What I would like to do, still in earliest planning stages, is to build a Tear Drop design but have it removable from the trailer frame. The trailer would need to do other duites such as haul building materials, transport motorcycles etc...

I am thinking possibly a "landscapers" style trailer (they are fairly plentiful around here). I envision a Tear Drop appx 9-10 feet long and typical width 4+ to 5 feet wide.

Size in part defined by the frame size.

Do you think it possible and feasible to build a self contained unit that could "slip into" position and then be bolted down when used as a travel trailer?

I am an ex-woodworker, currently a dog trainer.

Appreciate any leads or thoughts on the concept.

Yours in road travel,
Eric

I built the box and then set it on a 4 x 8 TSC utility trailer with the same intent as you. Four bolts and it's all good. The box is plenty strong and still lightweight. Browse through my link for a look.

Appreciate that Regis.
Seems like it is not a common occurrence.
But looking at lots of the "builds" it is also becoming obvious that many units are plenty strong enough to do this.

Now my search for a trailer begins in earnest. How big/small will it be? Only time will tell what I find in acceptable condition.

Again with my appreciation,
Eric

The Microlite Wazat is built that way and the frame for both capsule and trailer are aluminum.

Regis - you only use 4 bolts to attach the body to the frame??? Am I reading that right? I used 13 bolts and construction adhesive - and was worried it wouldn't be enough!!

I used 4 bolts to hold mine to my frame. I would think as long as your body was rigid enough to move and you didn't have space to just build/get another trailer, and you had a hoist I would think it would be easily doable. Just keep the fenders mounted to the frame, not the body (or both like mine  )
