Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I was camping this weekend, and for some reason i started thinking about ditching the tent and buying a camper. however that is not something i can afford, after doing some looking around online i found this message board.

after browsing around i saw alot of things that i liked.

someone had put together a 70 page manual on how to build a teardrop on a 5x8 redtrailer. I was wondering if anyone happens to know where i could find similar instructions that cater to a 4x8 harborfreight trailer. From what i can tell i could save quite a bit of money on the trailer itself, and being on a tight budget that is something that is really important. I did see a few different people selling these plans on a few sites, but i have never attempted to do something like this before, so i wouldnt want to invest money in one of these sets of instructions, only to find out that I was in over my head, or i couldnt afford it.

There are a lot of 4x8's being built on here. Go to the build forum or just about any other and you will get all the answers you will need. Erv

Joe welcome to the board. The Generic Benroy plans at the top of the page can easily be modified for a 4 wide.

The Generic Benroy is a 4x8 and is easily modified to 5'x8'. If you go to the Hall of Fame above and click on the TD you like you will find lots of build threads. Lots of us have our build threads in our signature also. The link seems to be not working right now but will be fixed soon I am sure.

Also The Design Library in the Menu above has a bunch too.

Hi Junemann. We had to look at our camping needs as we were now too old to be crawling around on the hard ground, and we really love camping.
The solution, after much research, was a teardrop.
I scribbled a few plans from ideas of what we wanted. Our plans changed every time we sat down for a few minutes to talk about it.
In the end, we just went for it.
The whole build was done 'on the wing' as we were in no hurry to complete the project and we wanted to be sure we had everything covered.
Well, after 14 months, we are almost there and we are very pleased with the results so far.
I'll post some more pics in the next few days so you'll see what I mean.
As for the cost...we have spent almost $1,900.00. The total cost will be around $3,500.00 which will include a mattress at $1,000.00, sheets and pillows at $400.00 plus new cutlery and crockery.
All in all, a cost effective solution, and it suits us.
Check out all the plans here and take ideas that will suit you. You'll surprise yourself at how simple it really is to build a teardrop.

A 4x8 should be doable, but before you stick to it...

Ask yourself a few questions,

What type of lumber will you be using?

If you want to use Baltic Birch, which comes in 5' x 5' sheets, a 5' wide would be more efficient.

How much rom do I want?

The old lady and myself are both "big boned". After drawing a 4wide and 5wide box on the garage flor and laying in it, a 5 wide was quickly decided on. Actually, measuring a queen matress, and realizing an extra inch on both sides would give room to tuck the blankets in, 62" interior width was decided upon

And, most importantly, can you live with a 4' wide???

It is cheaper to save up and build what you want than it is to sell number 1 and start over on number 2

Hey Juneman, I've been working on the Kuffle Creek plans for an 8 foot cubbie. (Google it and you can't miss it). You have to buy the plans. And I wouldnt call them entirely complete. But they are a good addition to the mix. And you can look at my build thread below.

I bet he is out in the garage taping out lines and laying on the floor now. Think we should have told him to take out an air mattress .

Actually, we did a similar thing in the lounge room. A cut down packing carton taped to the TV unit served as the roof and some dowel rods for the sides.
Lots of medical tape was used as well...in the name of research of course.
If anyone had called in to say hello, we would have been put away, but it was still fun anyway, and it served its purpose....the setup that is, not the tape....well the tape as well, but not like you think.
