Just got my fenders from rw johnson
was wondering how much top clearance i should leave at the top side
between tire and fender .don't want to hit a bump and rip the things off

I went by what looked pleasing to my eyes. It is MORE than enough to keep the tires from hitting.

no i dont think my springs are to loose but they are just one leaf spring but i was just wondering if there was a rule of thumb for such .look is were ill put it but if you had to guess would you say no closer than a 2 inch space would be good

If it is a real concern, measure the distance between the top of the axle to the chassis rail and use that as the distance between the top of the tyre/tire and the mudguard.

Hey Norm, Just answered your PM, but on mine I have really low clearance and drove throiugh some "interesting" angles and never had a rub. I would just center the fender around the tire and you will be good. Mine is actually below centered and just over 2 inches clearance.

...measure the distance from the top of the axle to the frame...this is as much as it is possible for the axle to move under maximum deflection(major pothole/bump at high speed with max load onboard)...I would leave at least 3+ inches.................

It's good to hear from you. Thanks for posting this question. I'm about 1 month from installing my fenders and was wondering the same thing.

...something to try...take a small piece of 2x4 and place it on edge, across the tread of the tire, put the fender in place and take a look...adjust accordingly................................
