this is my solution to keeping my galley hatch opened and to keep the wind from blowing it closed. I'll cut them to size and insert a spring inside the bottom part that is too weak to spring it open but strong enough to assist in opening.

Could you explain a little more? Was it an collapsible paint stick?

Here is my solution.

My hatch is very light so no assist is needed.

But I wanted a support that would hold it up, lock automatically when opening, and not unlock (allowing the hatch to fall) if the wind were to remove the weight while the hatch is open.

John: yes they are paint extender poles. The inner pipe is smaller then the outside one and has a twist knob that tightens against the inner tube. I plan to cut them down to what I want my hatch to open to and fasten them to my walls. After they are cut I will experiment with springs to make opening the hatch not so laborous. I haven't skinned the inside of the hatch yet and right now I would guess it weighs maybe 30 #. It will probably double that after skinned.
