Side popout "drawers" for feet (bed extension)

Postby tcolar » Sat Jul 17, 2010 1:33 pm

While trying to figure a way to get my 6'1 body in a not too heavy trailer, i came up with the idea of having a side pop-out hollow "drawer" to add a bit of width to the trailer, where my feet would go when sleeping.

I was wondering if anybody ever tried something like that and whether it was a bad idea, don't see why it would be bad except maybe it would be hard to prevent water/rain to get in at the "drawer" seal ?

Here is a quick shema :

So when popped out (hollow) it is the "end" of the bed (feet), and when popped back in it could maybe serve as one of the dinette bench.

I would probably use heavy duty rails to make it slide in and out (the kind of heavy duty rails they use for servers in data center)

Anyway, was wondering what other thought about that idea.

thinking about it. You could simply make a door that is hinged along its lower edge to drop down. It could be held out flat by steel cable check straps. A sloping canvas roof would cover that and the sides, cosy, warm and lightweight.

Mike, yeah maybe that might be a simpler design that my slide in-out box, will think about it, although having a folding box closed on 5 sides might also be somewhat tricky.

Do you know if anybody has tried such a contraption ?

Renegade, I rather not use the canvas, mostly because i live in the rainy PNW, so my feet touching the canvas while sleeping during rain would guarantee a cold :)

George Teague used a drawer to extend his daughters top bunk on the Compact GT.

You could make it waterproof by having a door that raised and make it a bit bigger than the box. Have guides in the top to keep bugs and rain out. If you work at it you could even get it to fold in and up...... 8)

or just cur a hole and stick your feet out!

You could also make your box hinged so that it swings down (I think).

Ya know Kenny that did make me think he could do like the Hybrid trailers and make a pop out with a slide and tent poles and tent material and make a unique pop out for the bed. He would need to really make the the tent material or canvas waterproof in order to do it but.......

So here is my plan, I tried to find a simpler design.

Have a swing open "feet" door, retained by tension cable when opened.
Then have a "Cap" that fits on top of it, I would probably make that cap of foam covered with fiberglass or something lightweight like that.

When not in used, the "cap" would be stored under the "seating" bench.

Here are the design.

Any comments ?

 If you don't have a door on top you will be putting the cap on in the rain---or not....Why not have the cap attached or at least where you can put it on before the box goes out.
