I've been trying to figure out the best location for the gas struts to assist in the lifting of my hatch. I think that I have finalized the bracket locations, but before I start poking holes in the sidewalls and hatch, I'd appreciate your thoughts on my set-up.

The struts that I have, have a maximum stroke length of 12.8". As I have my brackets positioned, the strut will only compress about 7 3/4" of the 12.8". Can you tell please if this will be a problem?

Hi Tom, I found a pretty good thread on the strut locations here: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=36437&highlight=struts Lower in the thread, Gage shares his simple way to do it that is the easiest I've seen so far.

Another member reminded me that you can PM any of the seasoned builders and ask them for help.

The way I have the struts mocked up is very similar to how Mark (Planovet) installed his. The reason I went this route is that I only have 1 1/2" of depth on the structure of my (long and curvy" hatch. I think this way will minimize the stresses from the struts on the hatch in the closed position.

The think I'm wrestling with is the "partial" compression of the strut, but it is probably another case of over-thinking.

That's a good thread to start from. Just find a way to make it work for YOU.
