Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I want to put aluminum edges on the edges of my wooden tear. Can anyone tell me what stuff to buy and were to get it, and give me some tips on how to do this.[/code]

I plan to build a Cubby, but have just started collecting parts.
My Cubby plans told me what size and type of aluminum angle to buy but I am not sure I know enough to advise you what to buy.

I do have an idea on where to buy it. I found the selection at Home Depot to be very limited. I did find a good selection at www.doitbest.com. Their prices seemed reasonable. And if you can find a local store affiliated with
Do It Best, they can order it for you. (otherwise you may have to pay shipping and who knows what that will cost)

Kinda curious about non-aluminum edge moldings and wonder what you guys think. I've seen pictures of some teardrops like the Little Guy and some home builts that look like they use a plastic or vinyl, rubbery type edge molding between the sides and roof and where sides meet trailer. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff and can tell me what it is and where to get it or at least check it out?
The Metal Co. Inc link above has some vinyl molding would that work?

I've just finished putting 12mm X 25 mm X 1.5 mm unequal angle aluminium around the edge of the teardrop I'm building. It bent around the curves easily and without kinking.

...beware of any vinyl molding, unless it is made specifically for automotive or marine use as the UV'ies and other elements may well kill it. Don't know specifically about the L'il Guy or others but a lot of what you are seeing is probably insert molding, it is an aluminum molding with a chanell that a vinyl trim piece fits into to hide the screws and dress it up. If you saw something on the Metal Co. site that looks good to you then call 'em up and ask about its UV resistance and bendability, I have found 'em to be pretty friendly

Actually the stuff works pretty good. The brand I liked best was made by TACO. They sell it at places like West Marine in 50' kits. It is easy to install and would really protect the edges where sidewalls meet the roofline. Myself, I'm keeping my options open for now, haven't really decided but thinking laminating wood strips to build a profile for the trim, but who knows.

They don't sell the stuff in the configurations that you need for a TD, especially a Cubby.

I'm dealing with this agony right now--trying to find 7/8 channel rubber/vinyl outside edge channel moulding (to accommodate a 7/8 wide wall with skins) for the hatch wall edges.

The largest Taco makes is to accommodate 1/2 inch.

Here is what I was thinking in the way of a TACO product:

Part#: V21-0205BKA20

I'd put it on with the wide side on the top and the smaller lip on the sidewall. Anyway that was my thought. I like your rope application so far, very salty. HAR me hearty!!!

Well, Steve--see "IrasHatch" in General Discussion for the sad rundown on my hatch weekend.

I wanted rubrail material to use for the hatch edges--U channel type stuff. (Know what I mean?) Something with 3 sides, to place on the top of the edge and it covers the top and both sides. Taco doesn't have anything wide enough to acommodate my wall and both skins.

I use the All-Rite M20 corner insert Molding. I buy it 40, 16' lengths at a time. They will want to cut it in half, because of shipping. The problem with this is from the lower front where your molding should start to your hinge, it should be one continuous piece. And this dimension is larger than 8'. So shipping it in 8' lengths won't help you. Most suppliers won't ship 1 or 2 lengths in 16'. By the time you pay for shipping a long length..The tube (yes they charge for that) and have to stay around the house for a day waiting for the Truck to show up sometime between 8 and 6 pm. a few pieces can get very expensive. For someone who only needs a few pieces your better off going to a local RV dealer and getting it. They should charge about $40 a 16' length.

I went to a local RV parts store that sells seconds and overstocks. He sold me two 20' strips of aluminum molding for $25.00 each. It laps over the outside edge and it comes with a dough like tape that goes underneath to seal it from the water. You screw it on, then put a hard plastic strip in the grooves of the molding to cover the screw heads.

I painted it black because it was white when I bought it. I looks pretty good, I think and it was cheap enough.

You just described All-Rite M20 moulding. $25 a legnth.. That was a deal. All-Rite charges more than that just for the "Tube" they ship it in. Thanks for proving my point.
