Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Sorry for the "noob" question, I've searched the forum and the interweb and am unable to find the trim that people use around the edges/corners of their teardrops.

Personally I would describe it as Edging or Beading but using these search terms yields little relevant information. Am I using the wrong words? In which case please could someone enlighten me. I'll be skinning my roof with Aluminium sheet and leaving the sides in varnished Ply so need something to "finish" the edges with.

Have you tried 'molding'? Not sure if he ships over seas, but Grant's got it on his sight, little bear teardrops. Sorry, I'm on my phone, no links, and I'm not 100% on his URL, but look in sdtripper2's index above, if nothing else, I know his sight is liste there.

Check your nearest RV repair/dealer they should have it or be able to order it.

Also, if you google "RV parts" you should be able to find some sources you can order from yourself.

I must admit I'm no further forward - I always rant at having to "spoon feed" noobs on other forums, oh how the tables have turned!

In the UK we don't really have RV Repairers, or RV Parts stores... We're not even allowed to wire a plug without invalidating your house insurance. So we're not trusted with these things!

This thread has a few links to the annealing process to soften the temper.

That's probably 3/4" Al angle from the home center that's been annealed. You smoke the angle with a candle then heat it with a propane torch till the smoke goes away. Then the angle is soft enough to bend. BUT, bending it work hardens it again so you'll have to anneal it several times to get it curved just right. I did it on the teardrop and it was a PITA.



I used RV insert trim on the Boxcar and it was MUCH easier to work with as its soft enough to bend without annealing. I think it looks better too.

What type of screws did you guys use to hold the insert trim? I think I will be screwing into the endgrain of the ply. How long and what size? Also I guess pre drilling the wood is a necessity.

I used stainless steel #8x1" pan head screws which I got from Fastenal, and yes, you need to predrill AND squirt a bit of sealant into each hole before inserting screw...I did not use any underlayment(ply), just layed the AL directly over the spars and rood edge, if you use any undelayment, add its thickness to the length of the screws.........

Am I missing something? You guys keep saying INSERT TRIM, are you using the trim only without the aluminum strip that it fits in? Im puzzled. If your only using the plastic trim piece then do you have to screw it thru the roof as well as the side wall? Thanks Dennis

Hi Boanerges4,

The Insert trim is an extruded edge trim piece that has a vinyl cover
that you insert into grooves in it, which covers up the screws you use to
hold the trim on / apply the trim with. The vinyl cover can match your wall
color or be a contrasting color or an accent color etc. The edge trim itself
can be natural aluminum or white usually - depends what you can find -
as does the vinyl color too. White or black vinyl covering seems to be the
most common.

Got mine at the local junk yard. They had a few old campers I had to strip it off of. Took me a few hours on Saturday morning, ('bout had a heat stroke), but I think I have enough to complete mine. If not, back for more. Ya, it's used but should clean up OK, if not, I'll paint it white to match the sides. Got it and some other parts for $20.
