bowed spar

Postby Aaron Coffee » Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:15 pm

Installed the headliner and it put a pretty good bow in one of the spars, middle is out about 1/2 - 3/4 farther than the sides. Would it take some of the bow out if I put a second spar on the inside and screw through the headliner and bowed spar? This is in the front closet area, so I could use it as a shelf support. My spars are 1X2 poplar with the 2" running along the profile, the ceiling will be one inch thick if that helps visualize what I am saying. Would it stregthen the bowed spar even more if I screwed the second spar at a 90 degree angle to the bowed spar, think an "L", also which way would be best screw through the bowed spar, headliner into the second spar or through the second spar , headliner and into the bowed spar?

Thanks
Aaron

I am building an all cedar framed tear and all my spars and all bracing is done in a T much the same as the L pattern you are describing. They are biscuit joined and dowel pinned every few inches and I have had no problem with any warping or twisting. I don't see why an L wouldn't add strength and stop the bowing but not sure if it will be enough to take out a bow of that magnitude in such a short span. My interior (except for one wall I haven't finished) has cedar strips so I don't think it will move at this point so I can't be sure whether the cedar strips or the T shaped spars added the most strength but I think either would be enough to keep a spar straight.

Bowed spar repair

Postby pawp » Sun Jul 31, 2011 6:46 pm

I had the exact problem on 2 of my spars. They are 1"x 1" heart pine. I attatched a 1" X 1/8" steel bar to the side while leveling the bow. So far so good. Cheap and easy fix.

Using my idea straightened out the bow, I still have one more spar with a slight bow, and will probably do the same thing, this one is also in the closet area, so it won't show. I had two spars left to cover with headliner and instead of trying to get the paneling to bend, I cut two strips to go from one spar to the next, not the prettiest, but it will be in the closet. By the way I am using box store bamboo paneling as headliner.

sticker said it was 2.7mm(if I did the math right that figures to around 1/8 of an inch)it was pushing out (the inside headliner)
