Hollow Core Doors

Has anyone ever used Hollow Core Doors / Slab Doors as a building material?

I built a headboard out of door slabs due to the light weight and nice finish. I just looked up the R-value which is 2.
They are really light weight, perfectly square, pretty strong, and dirt cheap. You have to use them pretty much as-is since they are hollow and once you start cutting into them or changing the shape they lose strength.

They are all 80" long, and come in widths from 18"-36"

I thought about using them as fold up bed slabs in my cargo trailer conversion...cheap flat and EXACTLY the right size.

That GREAT! I was sort of scared to pull the trigger on buying two of them..just wasn't sure they would support my weight. After seeing that I am sure they will work now.

I've cut into some hollow core doors and found cardboard, zig zagging across the inside rather than the egg crate material seen in the cut away. I guess there's no way to know what you're getting unless you open it up

I used a 24" wide one to build a cot for my minivan. Put legs on each corner with a support halfway down its length. Added a thermarest sleeping pad. Slid my ice chest and storage boxes underneath it. Worked great. Weighed almost nothing.

I replaced the bunk in my Shasta with three 15" panels from folding doors. I found they were a little saggy with an adult weight on them, so I drilled a couple small holes and filled them with expanding foam. They don't move a bit now. Hope that helps.
