Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

So I have my door jambs all designed and have a good idea of how the door construction is gonna go on my Benroy but I have a quick question. I am going to frame out the door opening with 3/4" x 3/4" x .0625" thick aluminum angle, except for the hinge side. I was thinking of mounting the hinge flat to the outside of the wall and the door instead of mounting it to the inside edge of each, like is typically done. I was thinking that the hinge could add the look of the angle on that last section and I figured screwing into the side of the plywood would be stronger than screwing into the end grain. Has anybody done their hinge like that before?

My hinge is going to be a 2" wide (when open) aluminum piano hinge from Mcmaster.

I am sure you could do it that way just make sure that everything is sealed well.

An option might be for that last side might be to use a flat piec of Aluminum instead of angles and still have your hing attach to the inside.

If you have a wide hinge you should be able to screw it into the door framing and not the plywood because you are correct that screwing into end-grain is not as strong as side grain

That makes sense and may be a better option...? I posted some drawing clips in my album of how I am anticipating doing this. I'd put them in the post but no photobucket here at work...

Robbie...... That is the way I did mine. I used a old inner tube from a bicycle tier under my hinge to help water proof it.
