Mattress size

Gonna start making my first ever tear this summer. I am leaning towards a 58" (outside wall) measurement. If I insulate I could end up with 54" inside.
Will I be able to squeeze a double size mattress in there? I keep seeing they are about 53" but would like some input before I start the build just in case.
Thanks.

For me if you want a 53" mattress then build a 54" or 55" cab. That way you have some extra for blanket tuck in ex...But sounds like you already got it.

Just me and Im no expert.
Good luck

Like many here, I did the web ordered, ship to local Walmart option.

My frame was 5' wide. My walls are about 1.5" thick.

I ended up with a nice foam mattress with a memory foam top the size of a queen bed.

When it got here I took a measurement and used a bread knife to saw off a bit. Slow and steady, bit by bit, I tested and cut. After a few attempts I had a nice, custom mattress.

Somewhere around $175-200.
Comfy as anything.

Saving a little room for tucked blankets might be a good idea, an inch should not be a real big deal.

If your goin with a foam mattres or futon it will fit fine. My futon was 54" wide. Id say give it an inch on each side wider just to be able to put the sheets on easier.

If it will be for two campers I think you might be happier with a 5 wide and a queen mattress IMO. I have a 5 and a 4. As enjoyable as it is to camp in the 4 I do enjoy the extra room that the 5 wide provides. :D :D

I do agrre with Aceman, I built a 5' wide on my first lil vardo, then went 6' on the 2nd. I couldn't imagine 2 ppl in a 4ft wide camper. I think most boat bunks are like 27" wide...
