I would like to build a 4x8 Benroy from the free plans here on this web page. To try to keep it as light as possible could I use 1/2 inch baltic birch plywood for the sides? I would also make all the cabinets out of pine to help keep weight down.

Thanks to all, Steve W.

Sure you can. Baltic birch in half inch may weigh about the same as cabinet grade 3/4" plywood because it is a hardwood core and more dense. It is better stuff but if weight is an issue I would look into that. My current build is using a sturdy frame made out of soft maple. It's strong and light weight and I will skin it with 1/4". Then a woody frame on the outside also out of soft maple.
Here is what I'm talking about...

All the interior shelves and dividers are 1/4" also.

Don't know if this helps or confuses you. But have fun with your build!

True baltic birch only comes in 5x5 sheets...for the sides, you're gonna have to splice it. A 4x8 sheet of material would take care of that, and would be less $$. Doug

Check around in your area where you get your Baltic Birch plywood as I have purchased it in the past in 4' x 8' sheets at Crosscut Hardwoods in Seattle.
Also look for Apple plywood as it is very similar to Baltic Birch and comes in 4' x 8' sheets.
Baltic Birch & Apple can be warped so select your sheets with care. :D Danny
