Another axle question

This just occured to me. When using that basic formula (34.5" from rear for 8' + 6" for each additional foot). Is that the length of the bed, or the overall trailer, rear to tongue tip?

It's the length of the trailer body. But since you have the Andrew & Rik spreadsheets, why not use those?

And just for the record, if you put the following data into Rik's spreadsheet:
Tongue weight = 5% of trailer weight
Body length = 96"
Tongue length = 36" (alternative 48")
Wheel spindles forward of rear = 34.5"
you get a hitch weight of 17% of the trailer weight for the 36" tongue and 16% for the 48" tongue.
As the 34.5" number is a 'traditional' one, it's perhaps not surprising that it produces a traditionally heavy hitch weight.
