CONVERTING A NORMAL TONGUE JACK TO SWINGAWAY.

Postby xe1ufo » Sat Sep 10, 2005 1:59 am

I was looking at some commercially-made little cargo trailers here today, and I liked this simple idea to make a tongue jack go nearly horizontal. The exterior tube is drilled for vertical and the laid-back possitions. The safety pin keeps it in place. (Swingaway jacks are not available here in Mexico.) Maybe somebody else on this list has probably already thought of this!

Neat idea. Does it cost a lot to have items shipped to Mexico? Harbor Freight has swing-away trailer jacks as low as $19.99. I will buy one from their store for $22.99, an 800lb capacity with a wheel so that the trailer can be rolled around by hand. The advantage to yours could be that it is center-mounted for better balance if that matters.

Dale--good point:

That's why I may put a SECOND one on mine, and use them as levelelers for the fron of the TD.

HF's Haulmaster, the 800-lb. capacity one, was only $17.95 at the store. Installation was a breeze, so for that kind of money, I figure I would stick another one on there. The raising/lowering lever works fine too. No problems at all.
