Hurricane hinge installation question (?)

Which side of the hinge fastens to the hatch? I think it is the long leg side (the left side in this picture), but I want to confirm with someone who knows. Also, if it is the long leg side, do you screw the vertical and horizontal part of that side to the hatch or only the top (horizontal) part?

I'd have think the other given the way the hinge faces. Not sure. Somebody will know.

Yep, that's the way it attaches. And if still you're not convinced, send Grant a PM and ask him. It's his hinge.

With the hinge located the way stated it will off set the hatch high about 3/32 to 1/8 allowing for a seal to be attached to the common edge of the sides.

You also have to figure, at 60 mph, in a driving rain, which side do I want facing the front of the trailer, the "scoop" or the "deflector"?

You had asked were the fasteners (screws) go on each section of the hurricane hinge.
For the teardrop roof side of the hurricane hinge, you fasten down through the (nearly) horizontal flange.

For the hatch side of the hurricane hinge, you fasten through the (nearly) vertical flange of the hurricane hinge. In the picture below, I have my hatch on the workbench to attach the hinge. You can see the where the fasteners go on the hatch side of the hinge. I applied sealant to both flanges and used a board to clamp down the horizontal leg of the hurricane hinge until the sealant cured.

Makes sense. With the vinyl insert on the forward piece, there are no screw heads showing on either side of the hinge. Thanks to everyone who answered on this one. Time to start putting it all together.

That's helpful. And that's how I was imagining it working. Plus a little overhang to send the water away from the seals.

I know this is an old post.. but exactly what I was looking for.
A couple questions.
1. So from what I am reading, to mount the hinge on the hatch side. Most folks only put screws in the end of the hatch (vertical leg of the hinge), none/few through the top.
2. Also, what about keeping the hinge from sliding from side to side when it's lifted? I thought about (thought I remember seeing a post somwhere) about cutting the hatch side of the hinge shorter than the cab side, and putting a set screw in each end? Any experiences here?
Thanks,

Hey, Brian!
Send me your e-mail and I'll shoot you off about 10 pics that show how I trim the hinge and cut a slot for screws to keep the lid from shifting side-to-side. Happy to help any way I can ... just give a holler!
CHEERS!
