Where to find 1/8 inch Baltic Birch

Postby stu_stumble » Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:32 am

Hello all. I am trying to locate some 1/8 Baltic Birch. I live around Norfolk NE. I have checked with local lumber yards and they do not have this stuff. Only have 5 MM Luann which from reading the forums is not good to use at all for skinning the exterior of my camper. I would be able to drive to Omaha NE if Necessary. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to locate some of this in Nebraska. Would Lowes or Home Depot carry this. If I cant find this what would be suitable to use for skinning my roof otherwise. I am building a Rimple design with 24 inch radius on front and back. Like I said I can find plenty of Mahogany Luann but I am not sure this will work. I plan on coating everything with CPES. Thanks fro the help in advance.

Cabinet shops and speciality wood stores. They may be hard to find but normally every region has a cabninet shop or store that sells wood to the other cabinet shops. Might call one nearby and ask them where they buy their wood after you explain what you are doing.

This is a handy reference as well.

If you just can't find it anywhere locally you can always order it from several places online for a shipping charge of about $100-$125. Another option if you can't find 1/8" bitch is 1/8" and 3/16" Okoume marine plywood which will cost more but will bend just as easly and uses a waterproof glue. If you are painting it or covering it - it will work well. If you are going fo the natural look it will look good as well but not the same appearance as birch. Just pointing that out if by some chance some place has that instead of the birch.

There are at least 2 lumber yards around here that has it. I guess NE is special.

If you go to a lumber yard, not lowes or home depot, but a real lumberyard, and tell them what you need they will be able to get it for you. They only problem you may run into is they may have a minimum order. For my local yard they wanted me to order 5 sheats

Check with privately owned lumberyards. I found it at the first two I called this week.

I asked at the local Menards lumber desk. The guy looked through a bunch of his supplier books and sent me
to some other lumberyards. Anyway, I'm picking up two sheets tomorrow morning. Going with 3 lam 1/8" Baltic Birch for
the inside of the galley door, and two lam 1/8" Bending Birch for the outside, which will also be covered by aluminum skin.
