Bending Roof Skin?????

Postby stu_stumble » Thu Aug 09, 2012 8:20 pm

I know there are other threads on this and I have read them. I am new at this and want to make sure I am getting this all right.

Can you bend 1/4 (5.2 mm) Luan plywood for rook skins. I will have 24" radius on front and back as I will be building the Rimple design trailer. Can I make these bends without much hassle like having to steam the wood or wet it, or will they break.

Should I use 1/8 Baltic Birch instead? If I do this will one layer of this be sufficient or would I need to double layer it. I will just be sealing and painting, no aluminum.

Also, do I bend the plywood I get be it 1/4 luann or 1/8 baltic lengthwise(over the 8 foot length) or on the short size( The 4 foot length)?

I appreciate all of the help with this from all of you.

I have not tried to bend 1/4 inch to a 24 inch radius. And I don't plan to any time soon. 1/8 baltic birch is plenty strong. But i have only seen it in 5x5 foot sheets which leads to having to some how getting it sealed up unless you are going aluminum over it. I do not have aluminum over mine and on the one place I was going to fastened two pieces together on a spar did not go so well but after lots of epoxy mixed with wood dust and a patch over it doesn't look all that bad and has not leaked. I would do it again but better.
