This is possibly the best known of the jobs I have made, photos of it have gone all around the world. I know this may not be the correct place to post this but it might display what can be achieved when you put your heart into it. I made this in 1973 and it is still in the same condition as when I made it, (excluding a bit of wear and tear on the wood). This is a 1/6th scale replica of the 12 pound cannon from the upper gun deck of HMS Victory. Everything was hand made. The chain links were made made from 1/16 dis. steel rod and each one oxy welded. The rings, hooks, chain etc were all hand forged to shape. The barrel is 20 1/2" long and was machined on a Myford Super 7 Lathe, it's 3" in diameter at the breech (the big end). It shoots a 12 gauge round lead ball and burns black powder. It is extremely accurate and makes a wonderful sound when it "talks". I have won every shooting competition that I have entered it into.
If you believe you have no skills and can't achieve your dreams, you are quite correct, you never will. If you put your heart into it and find a gentle and knowledgeable friend/s to help you and guide you, then you will indeed succeed in fulfilling your dreams. I know a guy who started to build the desire of his dreams and the result was horrendous. But when some good friends stepped in to help and guide him, it was amazing what this guy achieved. Never be afraid or feel too embarrassed to ask for help. Maybe a good place to start is by joining a "Men's Shed group" the same as we have over here. I believe they started in the US and you can learn all kinds of skills at these sheds. Don't be afraid to try.
