Paint on epoxy resin advice needed.

Postby toddallman » Sun Sep 30, 2012 8:25 pm

I am just about at the stage where I will be applying the Epoxy Resin and fiberglass tape on my TD. I need advice from all of those who have skinned with paint. I was wonder what kind of primer and paint people have used. I am aware that many used boat or automotive paint but has anyone used paints from other sources such as the big box stores? I would like to save on money because the funds have run low on my project. I need to try to get this project complete and out of my dads garage soon. He would like to park his new truck someday soon.

I used Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer and Gloss Protective Paint on the inside of my tear, which was also epoxy sealed. I think Zach used the same thing on the exterior of his teardrop the X-II. Planovet used Tractor and Implement paint I think.

I used Valspar Tractor and farm implement also but TSC no longer carry's it so will probably go with an auto paint in a couple of years.

In regards to Tractor Supply Valspar Tractor and Implement paint versus the new TSC Majic Tractor,Truck and Implement paint. I also used the Valspar on my exterior. I was well pleased with the results, though I painted in 105-110 temps and used NO hardener for two reasons: the high temperatures would've caused too rapid drying (I didn't want it to crack), or pull apart from the polyurethane I was overcoating (I let it cure for a week between coats, the same with the poly). I used the TSC Valspar because it was chemically similar to the polyurethane (both had urethane resin as part bases). The TSC Majic brand replacement paint should be OK for interiors, and in most exterior colors (some are reported to fade in sunlight) and it reportedly dries slower (needs hardener). Its' alkd resin base is soy-based, according to some, and won't be quite the same as the older Valspar. I wish I had bought more of the old stuff; I fortunately have some left for future use.

Four coats of CPES on all wood skins, 4" fiberglass tape and Aeromarine layup epoxy on all corners, two coats of Zinsser oil based primer, and three coats of Rustoleum Safety Yellow. Used 4" foam roller on everything and thinned the last coat of Rustoleum by 25% with mineral spirits to get that smooth and glossy final finish.

AS I recall Zach used Kilz primer and then Rustoleum protective enamel.
I went the smae route, minus the Kilz.
I am happy with it. on top of it Rustoleum does come in alot of different colors nowdays.
