Best foam for mattress

I'm rebuilding an old pop up camper. I need some foam for one bunk end mattress and the dining area/fold down bed. I'd like it to be 3", could maybe be 4". There are multiple sites online but I'd like to get some advice from folks with practical experience.

Thanks. What's a good source for it? When I search all I find are 3 and 4 inch mattress toppers. Would that work as a primary mattress? Where did you get your memory foam?

MANY people use the 4" Walmart memory foam/high density foam mattresses. A queen size is just a little over $100. I have heard nothing but rave reviews. Some people say they are more comfortable than the mattress they have at home. I am not speaking from experience as I have not finished my cabin yet, but that is what I am planning to buy.

I would try and locate one you could try first before ordering memory foam. I personally can't stand it and would just as soon sleep on the plywood floor in my TD than a memory foam mattress. Some like it and some don't.

I found a 4" Serta memory foam in queen size at Overstock.com for about $100 shipped. It came with two memory foam pillows as part of a special deal and they are really nice. We have checked it out and it is very comfortable. You can feel the floor with your hands and knees when you first crawl in, but when your body weight is fully distributed it is just like being in a real bed. The down side that I have read on other posts is that memory foam gets hard when it gets cold and heavier people can feel the floor. We are not cold weather campers and we are average weight so those things didn't affect my decision.

I recently got mine from http://www.thefoamfactory.com/. Their best foam (Lux) - 54"x76x4" was about $125 with free shipping. It's a terrific mattress. I have hip problems, but this foam keeps me nicely cradled. Could have gone with 3" in this quality or 4" in the next down in quality. Good luck.

I checked the foam factory site and they will cut it to any size you want. I am considering going with their super soft foam (princess and the pea here) instead of the WalMart memory foam. Their prices are great, custom sizes and shipping is free. Can't beat that!!

We went with a mattress by mail which seems to be the same as foam factory and conventional foam. Memory foam is slow to get warm and in cold weather... We are happy with ours and went with the lux in 5", 4" would have been enough.

Make sure if you order a custom size to compare the price to the premade sizes they have. I got a quote and to get one 2" narrower than a size they already had was a 30% premium so it was much cheaper to just get the larger size and cut it yourself.

I was just going to note the same thing. I was looking at a custom size and was about to buy, when I noticed the same material, but in a larger standard size was cheaper. The price difference is completely worth the time / effort cut it down. I'm thinking of the 5" Lux, no memory foam. I had contemplated a 3" lux with a 2" memory foam topper. Can't decide.

I'd better decide quickly, the Treasure Island Meet and Greet is closing in!!

Another thing to consider - you may want to allow an inch or so of clearance all around help you make up the bed. Our teardrop is 60" wide on the outside and 57" wide on the inside. We used a standard full size foam mattress - 54" wide - and it works great. We don't notice the gaps.

I just ordered my mattress from FoamByMail (http://www.foambymail.com/foam-mattresses.html) -They had the best price on a "full" lux foam mattress @ 5" thick. The foam from FoamByMail is also Certi-PUR-US approved. Apparently it's certified to have less toxic out gassing than other foam. *shrug* (talk about an arbitrary only in the USA type certification!)

I went with a standard 5" thick height. I also sprung for a dacron batting to wrap the mattress in. I don't really care for the feel of foam against the sheets when I'm trying to sleep (I'm kind of a diva like that...). I will have to cut the foam down to size and make my own mattress cover, but I can sew. No biggie. I will also make some elastic 'suspenders' to keep standard 'full size' sheets tight on the mattress.

Thanks for the info on FoamByMail! One less thing to worry about before Treasure Island.
