what kind of trim to connect sheets of Luan?

Postby universal_exports » Sun Dec 16, 2012 6:20 pm

well I am ready to start my walls, I am putting up 1/8 inch luan sheets and was wondering if anyone has a good idea as to what to put between the sheets to connect them so you dont see the seam or edges where the sheets are butted against each other. I have found the FRP stuff that goes between the sheets and that would work but after trying it on a piece, the gap is to small to get the 1/8 inch luan into both sides. or am I not trying hard enough? any ideas?

Are you looking for a "connector" like a slotted item, or a cover. I'd think that any slotted item might not let it lay flat if it's got a piece of material behind it. I just butt my joints together on a backing piece (crossmember) and then overlay them with a piece of material that I've ripped down (1/2" x 1/8") and then either a brad nailer or a small stainless screw with a nickle finish washer. Thing is....it's a visible joint...tough to hide it, might as well make it a design accent. Doug

I agree with Doug. I used 1/4" X 1 1/2" lattice to trim out all my interior luan joints. Mine was a weekender so I was only dealing with flat surfaces coming together. You may need smaller pieces for rounded interiors.

after thinking about it, I think I can use the FRP joining pieces, I can push it up on the edge of one piece, but it is really tight, then cut the back lip off the strip on the other side, this will allow it to stay on and cover the seam, and make it easier to slide the 2nd sheet under the lip. Hard to explain but I think it will work. thanks guys.

you should be able to us the FRP is 1/8'' thick push is on tap lightly with rubber hammer but put a thin run of silicone [white] in it to hold better.
