Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Hi, I am a recently bitten teardrop covetor, and I want to build one. I want to get some input as to plans. Here's my deal. My better half has a debilitating disease, therefore I need space & a strong enough construction that I can place handrails in anticipation of loss of mobility. Also, we are kinda roomy folks, so need a king sized bed in it set up in such a fashion as to allow us each our own doors to get out without waking the other for that midnight trot to the biffy. Oh, one more thing, we live in Minnesota, so it has to be capable to be insulated well. I've looked at so many plans... my head is spinning. Any ideas? Has someone else run into this same issue? Thanks for all your help.

Maybe it's because I just like it, but Andrew's compact comes to mind. It has a rear door that could have a ramp built to access with a wheel chair if that becomes necessary. Widened, it coud take a King bed, but maybe a Queen would do with this type of trailer. It's a little larger than a TD, with standing room which is why I like it. My wife is claustrophobic and can't take really tiny spaces, or those that are too enclosed. She too has a delibating disease, so I need all the convenience I can get on our tiny budget.

Very workable, I can modify it slightly to meet my needs... I am interested in your plans when you are done, but I may also be building it simultaneously as you are. I on the otherhand won't be able to start it until the dead deep of winter (probably December, most likely January). I'm going to keep looking, but I think you just sold me on your plans... My better half too is clausterphobic & wants to be able to stand.

Well at first blush I thought you could build a 6' wide Generic Benroy. You can make it plenty durable, and add rails and all that stuff...

But reading further, it sounds like you are after something more like a T@B. You could build your own home made tab... add the rails... be able to stand in it... and even cook in it in the middle of your MN winters...

Actually I thought I had photos of a homebuilt much closer to a tab, but I can't find them now... (Did anyone else save the photo of the homemade Tab off of Ebay a few months ago?)

That thing looks great too. I really want a true teardrop with the galley in the back, just makes it feel like camping more, but I'm game on anything at this point. Does anybody have copies of plans I can peruse? I don't want to spend money on plans right now until I know it is something I can build with my limited building experience, that the layout will work well and that it is truly what I want. That and my better half would have my behind in a sling if I blew a hundred bucks on plans and not use them. Does that all make sense? Ok Found info on the trailer!!! It is a 1962 Knaus Caravan.....also known as the Swallows Nest. Body length is 7'6" with a width of 6' and an internal height of 6' as well. COOL little trailer!!!
