Billboard Tarps

Hello,

My brother-in-law works for billboard company, I was considering using an old billboard tarp to protect the roof. It would be white, all one sheet and I would probably glue it on with Titebond 2. The white roof would help keep things cool. Would I be able to get away with a lesser material like masonite. It is tempting to just put spars up and glue the tarp to that to help lesson the weight. Any thoughts?

Greetings, Dirk!

I've never used (or even seen) a billboard tarp, so I can't comment on its durability. But I can comment on the masonite and whether to use anything up there or not. Using masonite is all right, as long as it is the tempered type with the water-proof glue ... stay completely away from the typical light-colored interior masonite.

Re: sheathing over the roof spars ... it's only slightly heavier if you use, say, 1/8" luan, but the the added torsional stability of the box is greatly magnified if you do ... not to mention the extra protection it provides against possible damage from falling or otherwise airborne objects.

All IMHO. Good Luck on your project, and as always ...

CHEERS!
