Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Looking for a cheap mattress. Any ideas?

Not sure what qualifies as "cheap", but I am planning on using the Cabela's deluxe camp bed, which is 130 bucks, 3" of foam, has rolling straps and a zip off cover, and will fit snugly in my 4'x8' trailer at 48" x 78". I already owned the camp bed, so it wan't a hard decision for me: use what you have.

We bought a 5" medium firm Queen and could have gotten away with a 4".

I got my queen size 5 1/2 inch mattress from IKEA for $130. It was a while back and I'm not sure how much they are now, but it's a place to look.

An air bed is cheap.
A cotton futon is cheap.
Maybe check with a local mattress factory or store to see if they have a second, or slightly damaged one.

While saving money is always good, considering that most people spend 1/3 of their day using a mattress, sleeping on a cheap one when camping sure doesn't enhance the experience for me.
Sleeping on a cheap one in my home would be even worse.

I think the problem you'll find is that even normal double beds are too wide for your 4-foot teardrop. So you'll have to look at things that are made for camping - often 48" - or custom cut foam.

Foam beds will also be much lighter. The Cabela's one I mentioned is 10 lbs, so I won't have to battle too much to get it in and out.

The price seems to fluctuate. I got mine for much less than the current $169.99.

We got the 5" super soft foam, full sized (54"x75") from Foam Factory for $87. Shipping was free. It's comfy cozy. I needed to cut ours down on the sides a by 1-1/2". It fit our teardrop exactly but would have been snug trying to tuck in sheets and blankets and such. It is easy enough to cut with a nice sharp serrated bread knife or an electric knife. I also cut mine in half from side to side so that we can stack it to free up floor space for storing items inside.

I just bought a memory foam from costco. $120.00 for full size. Good deal - great mattress. Comes with cover.

That is what I ended up doing too. Mine was from Walmart but same difference.

I ordered a 6" memory foam, comes with a zippered cover from Wally World. 54 x 76 129$. Ships to the store, no charge. Doug

Joanns has their foam go on sale every now and then. and I had a 50% off coupon. so I got some 4inch for the queen size and 3 inch for the loft. Pretty comfy

Has anyone used a self inflating air bed/matt?
Apparently it's like an air-bed but a little more ridged and not quite so "squishy" so when one person moved the other does not feel like they're on a trampoline.

The only gripes are that it's difficult to deflate and bulky; neither of which make any difference when used as a teardrop mattress.
I think I'll get two singles rather than a double as we've a 5' TD

The reasons I built my teardrop were:

A) to keep from sleeping on the ground, and
B) to minimize the "hassles" and setup time for camping, particularly for a short weekend duration.

For both of these reasons, I used a foam mattress in my teardrop instead of an air mattress.
