I didn't like the one size fits all (10 gauge) theory for DC wiring so I started doing some research on DC wiring this morning. I ran across what I think is a valuable document so I thought I would share. It was written by Hella for automotive use and it's just what I was looking for to use as a guide for the DC wiring of my trailer. http://www.rallylights.com/hella/SensibleWiring.aspx

The rallylights.com website also sells all types DC electrical products under the electrical tab :o . Something in particular I was looking for was jacketed strand wire in various gauges and conductors.

Good luck with your projects.
Steve

Please note if you use the chart to size your wire, don't overlook the important notes below the chart:

1. Calculate the current load and find the next highest on the top row. Go down that column until you find the length you need to run. The wire gauge required is shown in the far left column.
2. The maximum lengths are based on a ½ volt drop over the indicated length.
3. To be safe, always choose one wire size larger than you need for the required current carrying capacity and length.

All of the wiring in Compass Rose is 14 ga or larger with the exception of communications lines from solar controller, DC shunt to battery monitor.

Thanks Chevy! I was just going to wire everything with 12 ga but the chart will help me save some money.
