spar urethane re-application

Postby BillZ » Mon May 06, 2013 9:00 pm

I am preparing to add some spar urethane to the our woodie. The original finish is beginning to show signs of wear. There is a thin line of clear caulk that I think is silicone where the roof meets the the trim at the side edge. There is also some of the same caulk in a few other places. I am assuming that this should be removed before applying more finish. What would be the best way to remove it without scratching up the wood?

Is it possible that I could get away with leaving it and applying urethane to the edge of the caulk? The caulk is still in good condition.

Silicone caulk will repel any finish application. If you do not remove it, the finish will just slide away as you apply it. I don't have a good way to remove it other than scraping and sanding. Heating it may help, and there is a commercial silicone remover product available at big box stores.
