door hinge/molding questons!

hello,
i have been pondering a teardrop build for a couple of years, and have finally decided to jump in. i am still having to get a couple of things clear!

when you use the (grant's) alum. offset piano hinge, do you only use the T-molding on the "non-hinge" edges of the door, and then use the small "corner" seal on the T-molding, and no seal on the hinge area?

thanks for any advice!!!

Hi, Ed!

When my hinges are completely closed, there's very little room for a weather seal ... however, I typically use a very thin 1/2" wide closed-cell foam tape with an adhesive back ... it takes a little while for it to get "broken in" and used to being compressed so tightly, but once you've opened & closed the door(s) a few times, it'll be fine. You can probably find something that will work at ACE, OSH, or big-box hardware store.

Did I send you some drawings showing the hinge installation and T-Molding and Edge Molding orientation? If not, drop me an e-mail and I'll send them along. The hinge drawing shows the little weather seal I use.

Continued Good Luck, and as always ...

CHEERS!

Here is a pic of the off-set hinge I got from Grant. It's for a 3/4" thickness.

Since it has an off-set it allows you to put a seal on the inside lip of the t-molding. I also put a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum next to the hinge knuckle.

That's a nice way to finish off the hinge side with the offset piano hinge.

I'm planning on using the same hinge, so it is nice to see pictures of how it looks installed.
